Having spent 18 months with my parents whilst the divorce was finalised and the marital home sold, it's done! I've moved into my own (slightly old & wonky!) house. First night with DD was Christmas Eve and her room is looking lovely after some hard graft with the furniture today. Thank you to all the posters offering such wise words of wisdom earlier in the process. For those still in the thick of it, this too shall pass.

Wow that must feel amazing. I asked for divorce the beginning of this month after years of unhappiness. Husband very controlling and hasn't taken the decision well. A new home and start feels forever away so it's nice to hear stories about the other side of it. Sadly we can't move out due to financial reasons so going to have to awkwardly cohabit navigating this next stage. I'm really not looking forward to it.

I didn't expect to be with my parents for so long but it was better than the alternative. Could you look into an occasional airbnb/premier inn/stay with a friend for a break on 'his' time? I cannot tell a lie, I am so proud of me & DD. This time last year I couldn't see an end to it all, so to be closing the door to my space is extra special. I hope you get there soon.

Congratulations! I’m rather jealous as I had hoped to be in my own place with DD by Christmas but solicitors are being rubbish and nothing was completed in time. I moved into a rental last year on the 23rd Dec and everyone thought I was mad but it was so nice to be in! Unfortunately I had to move again so am in temporary accommodation and it’s my third place since leaving but surely that will make it all the more exciting when I finally get my keys!

Hopefully everything will speed up next week for you @trailblazer42! Did you manage to agree a date before Christmas?

No…waiting for STBX solicitor to respond to give completion on buy out and then my purchase can go through. They’ve blatantly lied before Christmas about sending paper work so not holding my breath. My new place is a new build so no chain, just an impatient developer as I reserved it in October and it’s sitting empty and waiting. So frustrating!!

That's incredibly frustrating but you'll get there! The conveyancing process was awful and possibly his last throw of the dice knowing that the buy out will free you in so many ways. Good luck!
Thank you everyone, I'm so excited for 2026.
