I am at my wits end with my husbands snoring and heavy breathing in bed

I have been with my husband for 16 years. He snores and it’s driving me absolutely crazy now. It always has but it’s now getting worse and I am done so so done with it. Last night I came down and lay on the sofa after listening to him for hours. I have not slept at all as my adrenaline was so high after being so annoyed about the snoring.

What can I do? I feel like telling him to leave but couldn’t do that to the kids. Or tell him his new bedroom is the living room. He bought an anti snore device and it made him breathe even heavier. Then he didn’t try anything else. Sorry if this is all over the place I have not slept 😫

snoring really is the worst! If someone ever discovers a complete cure they will be a millionaire a million times over 😂

RandomMess · 04/11/2025 23:05

DH sleeps 2 rooms away and I can still hear him! Perhaps that’s why ear plugs don’t cut it.

If we have to share its earplugs, snoozeband, melatonin and Phenergen to knock me out.

I got one of these and it has reduced my snoring by around 85%. Very expensive but in my wife's view well worth it

My partner uses a snoreguard which is similar in appearance to a dental plate the idea being to create a free airway through the mouth

LushLemonTart · 04/11/2025 23:22

This works for dh. He's also been checked for sleep apnea.

Love my husband very much - but we sleep on separate bedrooms! Sometimes I get judgement about it - but I love sleep!!! We are mid 30s. Just because I can’t sleep next to a revving tractor each night doesn’t mean I don’t love him.

Find an arrangement that’s comfortable for him aswell and don’t give it a second thought. My husband also sleeps better now as I’m not always waking him up

That's true they sleep better. We sometimes sleep separately if the mouth guard isn't working. Usually if he's drank a fair bit.

Go to the GP and see about a referral to the sleep clinic. My partner was diagnosed with sleep apnea and now uses a CPAP and no longer snores (although the sound of the machine isn’t great either….).

He needs to ask for a newer model. I slept in a separate room for 10 yrs due to the noise of my DH's CPAP machine. Now we're back in the same bed - it's lovely!

@Frillysweetpeahe only started using it the start of this year, it’s a Philips Dreamstation. Worth asking what else they have to try though, thank you

Curlymam88 · 05/11/2025 07:37

Ive start3d to wear wireless earbuds to bed. Yes i know some people say wireless earbuds are bad but I put them in to sleep and listen to rain or thunder and lightening on YouTube to drown out the noise of him breathing like a pug and snoring like a pig but at least I can sleep now 🤢

JustHaveANiceCupOfTea · 05/11/2025 08:00

I've recently bought a pair of moulded earplugs, and for two weeks I haven't been bothered by DHs snoring. It took a little getting used to (you can hear your own pulse and breathing) but they have stopped me fixating on the snoring and working up the rage I used to feel. I can still hear my alarm. They were expensive, but for me were completely worth it.

I understand your anger, that was me. Luckily we had a spare room, so he’s in there now. He refused to do anything about his snoring, but then he refused to do anything about his ED too!

I had one like that for 12 yrs. Whole bed vibrated with his constant everybreath snore. He went in the spare room ... then the added ED and no desire to fix it. Dumped him in July. ...

He may have sleep apnoea. Has he been to see the Doc?

Is he fat? I lost 1/3 of my body weight so far this year. Not sure exactly when but after a while my partner (who used to wear earplugs) said I'd stopped snoring.

Before that I used to use mouth tape, which really reduced the snoring. Only thing that did. Takes a little while to get used to but effective for me.

Silicon earplugs. Seriously, as the dw of a snoring hospital consultan,t who not only snores like a rhino but also gets frequent middle of the night phonecalls, these have changed my life. I'm an incredibly light sleeper and dh snoring, his job and having rubbish sleeping kids had me on the edge for years- I felt like it was going to lose my mind. Now i sleep through anything.

I currently have a very tired dh beside me as the dog was up twice during the night. Historically it would have been me that woke up. First I heard of all the night shenanigans was this morning whilst relaxing well rested with my coffee ☺️

Will you hear the smoke alarm? 😴

pollymere · 05/11/2025 12:38

I just bought my DH new pillows from M&S. No snoring at all. I realised this was the problem when we were staying in a Travelodge and he didn't snore. So I went out and bought the exact same pillows they use. Unfortunately as they got older and thinner the snoring started again.

But these M&S dupes have given me back my sleep... They are synthetic ones for side and back sleepers, medium firm. 100% polyester filling.

Laura19881 · 05/11/2025 17:26

Thank you everyone 💛 the irrational part of my brain after really bad sleep for months/years got the better of me yesterday. I really appreciate all of your suggestions! He went to the GP and got sprays and strips so hopefully something works. He also slept on the sofa last night and I had some sleep. Will also try the snore pillow.

Regarding earplugs I will try different types. I can hear my heart beat when I put anything in my ears. But will definitely give the silicon ones a try.

Thank you everyone x

Is it possible those of us on this thread driven crazy by snoring might have hypersensitivity to noise especially snoring? I have tinnitus and had to have a very sophisticated hearing test in a special chamber in a hospital and I was told afterwards my hearing is in top 2% of population. I do wonder if that makes me hyper sensitive. I have used loop earplugs and still hear the snoring. I have used noise cancelling headphones listening to sleep music and I can still hear the snoring. If I am hypersensitive to noise I don't know what I can do about it. I wake myself up if I snore - I don't snore often but do occasionally. I kid you not.

I take the old fashioned antihistamines and they help me sleep but I only do that once or twice a week.

SkaterGrrrrl · 06/11/2025 20:09

Good luck OP. Let us know how you get on with the wedge pillow. DHs is called Putnams.

I don't think I have good hearing but I have.... Weird hearing? Like if there's a noise in the background I find it impossible to concentrate and if two people are talking at once I find it almost painful. Maybe some neurospicyness.

Yep been there, got the t-shirt. Husband has no interest in addressing his snoring and sleep apnea and so we sleep in different bedrooms. It’s much better.

However, it can be an expensive practice to maintain when on holiday

Blankscreen · 08/11/2025 07:29

If DH has a drink then he sleeps downstairs as his snoring is wild.

On a normal evening he still snores quite loudly but I am a very light sleeper so even that tips me over the edge. I use ear plugs and play white noise and I do manage to sleep.
