Parenting plan/child contact issues with ex

I am looking for advice. Myself and my ex have 8 year old child together. The things between us do not look great, he refuses to discuss child contact arrangements and whatever I try I receive lots of derogatory comments, insults in my direction and nothing changes. We live in the UK but we are originally from abroad and our son has foreign passport (which is currently with his dad as he refuses to pass it on to me). There are lots of issues that accumulated over the years.

With summer approaching we have issues around childcare. Everything my ex wants on his terms. Now, I did try to speak to him, I sought legal advice and offered mediation. He refused. At this moment I wanted to obtain agreement, a parenting plan, prepared by a solicitor for him and me to sign. The quote I received for that alone was between £1500-£2000 and that is something not enforceable.

I know that my next step would be to go to court but realistically how much does it cost? I looked into legal aid but that does not seem to be applicable for me.

Any advice would be appreciated as I am unsure what to do. I feel like I am going in circles.

I am not in a position to spend thousands of pounds on solicitors. Are there there any other steps I could take? The communication with my ex is not an option unfortunately.

Be a litigant in person, with a mckenzie friend. Means about £300, I think, to issue the c100. But family court want yoh to have tried mediation (unless abuse involved).
