Single Parent Help?

Has anyone else been in this position that I am currently in. I have separated from my husband it’s been just over a month. I was told by a solicitor to apply for universal credit however today I’ve received a statement stating I’m entitled to a big nothing. I work full time and have an annual salary of 27/28k. I’m living with my parents until the house is sold and even then I won’t get much out of it as we only own 40% maybe 5k at a push. Why is there no financial help? I cannot afford £1300 per month on rent plus bills. There must be something surely? I’m not the first person who is in the situation. I’m interested to hear how other women survive!!??? *I also have a 4yo son who I pay childcare for

If you don’t have children you have ample salary to survive.

I’m surprised by this as when I was on £28K, I still got UC.
I wonder if it’s because you’re living rent free at parents.
I think you’d be better to reapply when you and kids have found somewhere to rent.
do you receive the child benefit?

InALonelyWorld · 15/05/2025 09:54

I think more context is needed. Do you have savings? How many DC & rough ages? Have you done the online calculator, if so what did that say? Childcare expenses?

Although from what you've said, you currently have an asset so definitely won't be entitled to housing element. You also have a decent wage so you won't get the element for you. It will all depends on your DC and childcare really.

Guessing you do have children as a single parent. Depends how many and what ages. You may get child maintenance, child benefit, childcare from parents.

My son is 4 his monthly nursery fees are £580 per month. I receive child benefit and no maintenance currently from his dad.

Is your son living with you and your parents? Or still with Dad until house sells?

HA93 · 15/05/2025 11:31

He’s living with me. He spends 1/2 nights a week with his dad

Check all your elements have been added on.
You should get single adult, one child and 85% of your childcare bill.
This will then be reduced by 55% of your income after the work allowance.
I'd estimate your award before deductions should be over £1200 but the work reduction will be just over 700 so you should still get around £500 ish from UC.
Once you find a house to rent you'll also get the rent element but your work allowance is lower when you get help with housing x

Do you have any savings? Did you meet with a job coach?

Zanatdy · 21/05/2025 06:17

I don’t think that’s correct, unless you’re over the savings threshold. Have they sent a breakdown of calculations? Check if based on renting, as i’m sure you’d qualify then.
