Hi, my husband has told me this week that he wants to get divorced. He wants us both to stay in the house until it sells and has said I either put up and shut up, or he’ll go and rent somewhere and only pay half the mortgage.
I am going to seek some advice but finances are really tight so I wondered if anyone here has been through this and can confirm that that’s all he’d have to pay. We have one child together.

Well if the mortgage is in joint names he technically wouldn’t have to pay that either

you could put in a claim for child maintenance but if this is not affordable on top of rent and mortgage he may simply stop paying mortgage. This would put you into arrears and damage credit ratings at best, worst end in repossession ( take long time to get to this )

this is why many separating couples live together while sorting it because they can’t afford to rent at the same time

obvs this depends on earnings and ability to pay but as you’d have sole use of the asset you’re generally expected to pay
