Slow solicitor or is this normal?

I had a meeting with my solicitor last Monday where it was agreed he would "come up with some figures" to send as a first financial offer. I still haven't heard from him.

This seems to be a pattern. He says he'll do something and every single time I have to chase it, which obviously costs me. He'll then reply (more costs!) to say he's on it and the next day or two he'll have done whatever needs doing. I can't afford to keep chasing him up. It costs me £35 for him to read my email and then another £35 for him to reply!

He also repeats things we've already discussed when we do meet up and doesn't seem to know what I should be asking for financially so keeps asking me what I want. That's what I'm paying him for no?

Is this shit or is it normal and I'm supposed to chase everything before he actually does it?

He was highly recommended my multiple people! It's driving me crazy with how slow things are moving but I feel like we're too far in to change solicitors now. Would I have to start from scratch if I changed or do my current solicitors have a duty to pass all my paperwork on?
