What do you say to your child when they say they're sad mummy and daddy aren't together anymore? Do they ever stop feeling sad? :(

I agree that it is sad and say however they feel about it is ok and Im there for them whenever they need. I ask them if they want to talk about how they're feeling. Tell them I love them very much, offer a hug. I have Autistic DC who don't always welcome things like hugs so we ask in our family. It really depends on the age though. My eldest understands why we split up and why they can't see their Dad more, due to abuse and doesn't want to see him more anyway. The others are younger and more bewildered by it and get caught up in stbxh lies. I can't explain why they need protecting from their own Dad, that wouldn't be appropriate and would put them in the middle even more then he already does. So I address the emotions and I leave the questions unanswered.
