How to support a friend

A friend of mine is going through a separation - it was pretty sudden. Can anyone share things that can help? I am at the other end of the country from them so cannot readily help with meals, childcare.

Just being there for them really. A listening ear there for some emotional support. If you have the opportunity, maybe pop see them or invite them to stay with you for a couple of days if you have the space for them.

I have a close friend in a similar situation. Usually she would have her mother's support but her mother seems to have sided with her ex, who was apparently emotionally abusive. This has obviously added to my friend's distress. I feel really helpless because we live so far apart. I've tried to be supportive and kind and just there for her really but I feel like I need to be doing more.
