I have seen a solicitor on a free consultation who said it’s easy to do a divorce online… but we have house, children, pension etc. wonder if I can do some myself and then get them to check it. I don’t want pay £2k but bc at the same time don’t want to miss something important. Is it that easy or worth going down professional route

I did, but that was ten years ago so things might have changed and I didn’t have dcs with ex-H.

We already had a financial separation agreement in place (we’d actually split up about 5 years earlier) so just paid around £300 court costs and put all the forms in the post (the forms actually got lost in the post so we had to get a replacement marriage certificate and then re-do all the forms - but that’s another story altogether, and a lesson in using recorded post for important things).

The legal divorce paperwork is very simple to complete and put through.

Sorting out life admin is best done with a mediator, unless you and your ex are in a position where you still treat each other kindly and fairly.

The agreements you make with the mediator are then written into a financial court order, which again is easy to get signed off by a judge.

There is two bits really. The divorce bit which is easy to do yourself and the financial order.

We agreed finances ourselves and did the form e's and then I just had my solicitor review and draft consent letters.

Think it was about £1k

I should think they meant just the divorce part was easy to do online. It is, no need for a solicitor for that part. But you will need one to sort the finances, even if it is just to write the consent order (the legal bit that goes with the finances).

The divorce is separate from the financial order. Do the legal divorce online then whilst you are in the compulsory waiting period, work out your financial settlement between you, you then need it written up on the correct forms to be presented to the court once the conditional order has been granted. Whether you need a solicitor each to negotiate is really down to your situation. I did my own completely
