How do I appoint solicitor?

I have spoken to a solictor a couple of times and feel confident that they are the ones I want to use when and if I get around to doing something about my situation.

Do I just ring them up and tell them I want to 'appoint' them, and does this cost? I just want to know I have them there in place as I am in a smallish town without a massive number of options as regards solicitors, and there is always the possibility dh could get in first.

Is that what you do? Book their services and have them there in the background ready for you? I am baffled by the whole process even though I have spoken to them before and done years of research on and off. If someone could give me a pointer as to how to start the ball rolling, it would be much appreciated.

It might be best to ring them and make an appointment to see them, if you want to use them you will need to start the process, they may not just keep you on hold and cannit stop your h from using them if you haven't instructed them,
