Has anyone ever done this to save stress or upheaval for children if you are both amicable?

Yes, I've done it. It was driven by finances but the benefits to our DC were immense. We told him what was going on and he accepted it.
It's not been ideal, can't move on etc. But my DS is happy and that means the world to me. My time will come.

When I grew up it the 80s it was quite fashionable to live like this. The parents physically split the properties though, so limited communal living. No one seemed particularly happy and I think it was a transition arrangement rather than permanent. Dynamics change as new interests and partners come along.
