Will/did you change your name?

And how much of a pita was it?

I wasn't going to, (keeping the same name as the dc etc) but the closer I get the more I think I might.

Do you have children? That swung it for me. I don't want a different name to them so I have kept mine.

BoohooWoohoo · 02/10/2023 11:38

I kept my surname because it's the same as my children's.

I've reverted to my maiden name, I much prefer it. The kids are teens and don't care. I won't change my passport yet though as we already have a trip booked under my married name, and it'll be a right pain to change the tickets and visas. Divorce only finalised last week so although I've been using my maiden name since we started the divorce process, I've only now started updating it officially. So far, it's been fairly painless. First bank was really easy, all online and done within hours, second bank requires forms and certified copies. Professional qualification changed fairly easily, have the form to do my driving licence, haven't tried the doctors yet, dentist was easy - they changed it months ago. They've all just asked for marriage certificate and divorce certificate.

My mum had 3 marriages (widowed young) and always had things in different names, it was always a bit of a joke but I think it is easier to change your name these days.

I'm considering going back to my unmarried name. I would like the same name as my daughter but unfortunately it's the same name as my STBXH.

Reverted to my maiden name. It was a bit tedious but helped by getting a Deed Poll. Deed poll is totally unnecessary from a legal perspective but gives you something legal looking to wave at people.

I’m going to go back to my maiden name when my divorce completes. But do you carry on being a Mrs or a Miss or even a Ms?

Bemyclementine · 04/10/2023 08:28

@Isheabastard I was just thinking about that this morning! Another thing to consider.

As much as I dislike it, I've gone for Ms. I think titles are outdated and not necessary, and given the option, I don't put anything, but sometimes you have to put something.

Am reverting back to my maiden name, tbh never completely changed from it and the DC (who have stbexh name) are used to me using both names. Changing it has been painless so far.

I was filling something in on line the other day, and the only option was Mr or Ms. I think that’s the way forward personally.

Other way around but I got married last year and have a son from a previous relationship and I haven't changed my name because I want the same surname as my son. I did add husbands surname as a middle name though.

PizzaPastaWine · 06/10/2023 17:55

I did. My DC were 6 and 8 at the time. Doesn't bother them.

Couldn't wait to do it and the slight inconvenience far outweighed the hassle.

8 years on it was only the other day a letter came in my maiden name and it felt SO good.

mollythemaid · 06/10/2023 19:10

I'm going back to maiden name. I already have a child with my maiden name, and two in my married name, so always had the different surnames. Officially, on my passport it's double-barrelled (handy for immigration at airports) but everything else I will change. Passport can change when it's up for renewal.

LDA123 · 06/10/2023 22:42

Back to my maiden name and feel good for it! The kids are not bothered at all.

minieggsandmaltesers · 08/10/2023 21:32

My dad gave me a good name and I'm enjoying using it again.
Kids have their dad's name. I couldn't wait to get rid of it.

RuthW · 08/10/2023 21:57

No I didn't change my name when divorced 15 years ago. I thought about it but dd didn't want me to have a different name to hers.

I'm marrying again soon and not changing my name.

Onedaystronger · 07/11/2023 19:00

I'm reverting back to my maiden name. I can't wait. I feel really strongly that EXH considered it a privilege that o got to use his name and I do not want to use it anymore.

I'd really really really love to do it now but I'm worried that it might cause complications wrt the divorce.

I'm going to use Ms. It is frustrating that this decision even needs to be made- men just get to use Mr and having Miss / Mrs feels outdated and ridiculous.
