Buying a car during separation

HI,

I am separated waiting for divorce. I am currently using family car (my ex husband's only name on it) and I would like to return it as my ex is asking to pay half car loan using child maintenance.
This car is too big for me now so I was wondering, would it be good idea to get a little used car for me and give him his car back?
I know he will sell it, will I be entitled to half of the money from selling?
What about the money I will spend (from my savings) to get a cheap second hand car? Would he be able to claim half of it as it will be bought during separation?

Any help would be appreciated as my solicitor is so difficult to reach...
Thanks

If the big car is sold any balance from the loan is a joint asset. As are your savings meaning the new car will be taken into account as a joint asset when you divid everything up.

Thanks.
What if I ask for a bank loan for car? Will it be considered as joint asset ?

The car is a joint asset but the liability (loan) will also be taken into account
