Can I start a divorce without notifying him immediately?

Does anyone know whether you can start divorce proceedings but delay the notification to your other half? The reason I ask is that we got married in another country under sharia law. He is there now for an extended visit to his family and because I asked him to stay a while so I could have some space. I want to start some conversations with him before he comes back but I have no idea how he will react, he could be fine, he could be awful. I understand that whoever starts divorce proceedings the rules of that country apply. For a man in his country it is very easy to get divorced. I don't want to risk this happening as would want my divorce under UK law for a number of reasons. So am wondering if I can start the process so have evidence that I started a divorce first if needed but delay notifying him until we have had a chance to talk and I can see his reaction? Thanks

The whole divorce process in England & Wales changed last Wednesday, and I haven't yet got my head around it, so I don't know.

No one posting their E&W experience will be relevant, however.
