Mediation/MIAM

Hi,

Been told to have an initial session of mediation on my own, before starting sessions with husband. Will he have to have his own initial one? Seems unfair if only one of us has to pay for initial. What do I discuss in this session? We dont have kids so its purely finanical issues.

When I went through mediation we each had an individual session before we had a joint one. We each paid for our own and split the joint ones.

You both have them separately. They check if you feel mediation is appropriate, ask what you want, get a feel for whether you know the law or not. Give you heads up on areas you should think about.

Question? Do you need mediation? Can you not sit down and agree yourselves? I know when I read through howto get divorce initially I thought you had to get mediation. You don’t. It adds to cost and time significantly

I dont honestly know - I assumed we did need it. We will be getting a financial order which I thought needed a MIAM

My first husband and I had no kids and had only been married 4 years. Joint assets were around £70k in house equity and around £100k in pensions. We just agreed a split we were both happy with through direct negotiation, and got our solicitors to turn it into a consent order. If you have lots of assets, or complex arrangements, you may need some help coming to an agreement, but in our case we were both young, fit, and healthy, with similar earning capacity and potential, so it was straightforward.
