Council tax single person reduction

Hello,
My husband left and I have applied for the council tax single person reduction. I got an email back saying I wasn’t eligible even tho I am the only adult living at my address. Does anyone know why this might be? I’ve looked online but can’t find any info

What exactly does the email say?

icelolly12 · 06/03/2022 12:32

Probably because they checked the electoral register and he's still officially living at your address.. you do realise proof will be needed from him that he has moved out, e.g. scanned copy of a new tenancy agreement. they can't just go on your word for it.

Trinxsy · 06/03/2022 12:32

Have you tried calling them? I've founded a phone call always works best with council tax issues

Whatadayyyy · 06/03/2022 12:34

@icelolly12 he is currently staying with his mum so won’t have a tenancy agreement to show them. I don’t know what kind of proof I could show them?

Did you inform the council he had moved out or did you just apply for the discount?

Will be give you a letter confirming he is living elsewhere?

Has he changed his address with his bank? DVLA? Phone bill?

icelolly12 · 06/03/2022 12:39

Tell him to re-register with the electoral register and to provide his Mums address, to change his bank statement to her address and send a copy of those, and send a letter to Council from him confirming the date he moved out.

Whatadayyyy · 06/03/2022 12:39

I don’t think he has changed his address. I have asked him multiple times to remove himself from the home address but he just doesn’t bother his arse. I just don’t know what to do. I will call the council on Monday

Tell them his new address.

Viviennemary · 06/03/2022 12:40

If he is living with his Mum then she will lose her single person's discount if she gets one. He needs to officially have left your home.

icelolly12 · 06/03/2022 12:42

Well if he doesn't bother, then he should be paying you half the full rate of council tax and inform him he's liable for this.

SmallOrFarAway · 06/03/2022 12:42

Hi can you get in touch with someone at the council and ask? When my ex moved out I just filled in an online form and provided his new address, even though it was only a temporary place he was staying. I didn't have to prove anything else.

Whatadayyyy · 06/03/2022 13:02

I did fill the form in online and gave them his mums address. The only thing I can think is his mum has denied he is living there so she doesn’t lose her discount? I will call them tomorrow and see what they say

OP I had an absolute nightmare with this. Ex moved out and I had no forwarding address as he just wouldn't speak to me. The council insisted they needed proof that he was paying council tax elsewhere but I had nothing to go on.

They also kept insisting they needed a copy of the divorce decree which is ludicrous as many people aren't married when they share a home.

It went round and round for months until eventually I contacted my local councillor and explained the situation and showed him all the email correspondence.

He could not have been more helpful and it was sorted within a week and the discount backdated.

Avidreader12 · 07/03/2022 06:55

I think it’s the electrol roll if you can change that when council check it will show you as sole adult. Also make sure you having got any joint benefits linked to the address

Whatadayyyy · 07/03/2022 12:40

Thank you @OhamIreally it’s such a pain. I called the council this morning but their computer system is having work done so I need to call back this afternoon. I explained to the woman on the phone and she said it sounds strange how I was told I wasn’t eligible. Will see what they say when I call later. If he keeps dragging his heels I will just tell him he has to pay half council tax till he sorts it

I didn't have to provide any proof, I went into the council offices and told them I was now the only adult in the household and they immediately amended my account and sent me a new bill.
