Recommendations wanted for sh*t hot divorce lawyers. I'm in Cumbria but happy to do phone/video etc. Situation is bog standard (not loads of money, or international or anything) but ex behaving like a....

I've recently instructed Forbes solicitors in Preston to act on my behalf. So far I'm very impressed. Definitely worth a consultation.

I need someone good too. Preferably who do legal aid work as I had domestic abuse.

If you don't have huge assets, then be a little bit wary of instructing anyone who will be unnecessarily confrontational. If you end up in court, your modest assets will get eaten up in legal fees very quickly. Somebody who knows the law and will advise you well, but who will encourage as amicable and collaborative a process as possible, is probably a better bet.

DOI: My husband divorced his ex a couple of years ago. He had to go to court because his ex refused several reasonable settlement offers made in mediation. Their case was settled at the first hearing, by consent, once his ex realised his settlement offers had been reasonable and she didn't have a leg to stand on. Just to get to the first hearing, DH's legal costs were around £15k and his ex's were close to £30k. Ex ended up with almost exactly what she'd been offered in mediation, but was £30k worse off because of her legal fees. She had a very aggressive lawyer who seemed to inflame an already acrimonious divorce. She would have been much better with somebody less combative.

Be aware they come at a cost .
If money is no problem them then go ahead
