Divorce cost?

Hi All,

I am wanting to apply for a Divorce on the GOV website, it states its around £550/£600 but is that really what the whole divorce process would cost or will there be further costs down the line at another stage of the Divorce?

We don't own a house, everything else financially has been sorted amicably between ourselves.

The fee for applying for a divorce is £550 the consent order is £50, this is if you do everything yourself.
My solicitor charges a fixed fee £1090 for divorce but this is not including any financial things
Hope this helps

Thank you that's not bad at all, was expecting a lot more costs involved :)

The price on the website is the total cost. A solicitor will charge you at least twice that to fill the form in for you, i.e. to do exactly the same as you would do yourself. They are not adding any value to the process.

I did mine myself and it was very straightforward. My xh employed a solicitor who was useless and kept filling in his part of the forms incorrectly and then charging him to correct it. It did nothing to demonstrate why you should pay so much more for a solicitor.

Thank you that's really helpful, will definitely be doing it myself I don't have any need for a solicitor really.

OP even though you have sorted out finances amicably make sure you get a consent order. This has to be drawn up by someone with legal knowledge whether it is a solicitor or a legal service.

As if either of your remarry particularly to a much richer spouse or you win the lottery then your ex-spouse can try and claim money of you, and they may be successful. There is a famous example of a lottery winner who had to give his ex-wife £4million due to not having a consent order.

Myself & DF have both done our own divorces online this year through the gov site, £550 each, both done on the 5 year separation rule & both at Decree Nisi reading date stage.

Mine is very amicable with EXH, however DF EXW not so amicable (even after being separated 10yrs!!) so their financial side of things is being sorted separately to the divorce, but in a nutshell if it's totally amicable there is absolutely no reason to pay a solicitor for the divorce.

Solicitor even said that to us 'why pay me thousands when you can do it yourself'.

Job done :)
