Maintenance?

Hello, I am new to this but am looking for advice please. How would maintenance work...I earn around 40k and my husband earns nothing. We have a teenage son and have been married for 20 years. My husband has tried to earn an income over the years, but has never sustained anything and all our assets have come from my work, or from an inheritance from my family. We have a house worth 500k and a mortgage (in my name only) of 90k. If we were to separate, what would I be expected to pay him each month? Thank you for your help.

If you were to just separate and your child is living with you for the majority of the time, I don't think you have to pay anything... IANAL though so prepared to be corrected. If you divorce though, regardless of whose name the mortgage is in, it's a martial asset and the starting point would be 50/50.

Child maintenance follows the child.
Maintenance between ex-spouses is rare but does exist, though is more usual at incomes like £100k.
You have equity of around £400,000 - maybe other assets, too, like savings and a pension. And he does have a 'claim' on these. So you're probably looking at a one-off payment rather than ongoing payments to him.

Thank you both.
