Getting out and joining groups following separation

Jal63 · 03/06/2018 21:10

I am recently separated, my husband moved out on March 5th, after 30 years of marriage.
I work full time but find the weekends really lonely as we used to do pretty much everything together.
Can anyone give me suggestions as to how to join groups or clubs, without coming across as desperate or just seeking another man, which I'm not!!
I love the theatre, cinema, walking and playing badminton - though not very well!
If anyone has any suggestions or tips I would be enormously grateful.

Have you heard of the app Meet Up? There are all sorts of meets ups from walks to cinema trips all local to you. Hope that gives you a good starting point.

Thanks, I haven't heard of this app but I will be downloading it this evening.

I sympathise with you and admire your attitude. I wonder if you'd enjoy volunteering. A friend of mine in her late 50's has kept herself busy following her husbands death by volunteering in various places including community cafes. She's made friends there and people call in to the cafe for a quick catch up with her.

Thanks for this suggestion. How did your friend go about finding local places to volunteer in?

I have downloaded the meet up app and have already signed up to join a 5 mile walk around Wollaton hall and deer park next Sunday! Thanks again, whoknows11.

Op, I think she asked around at museums, library's etc and went in to various community cafes ( There are quite a few in our city) and asked if any help was needed. Maybe you could search on line for volunteering opportunities?

Yay so glad @Jal63 you sound a very strong, brave lady and no doubt you’ll meet others in similar situations to yourself which will hopefully bring comfort and new friendships. Let us know how you get on x

Another vote for meetup.com

Did you inow that anyone can create a meetup event, so if there is anything you would like to do, and have company, you can create a meetup event. Best not to incurr any costs but generally, its brilliant. Enjoy

I went on my first meet up walk today and it was great to meet so many new and lovely people. I would recommend this to anyone who is lonely or who just wants to meet new people.
