Moving to more affordable area

Hi,

Briefly, my circumstances are: getting divorced after for 25years+, children grown up and left home, mortgage paid off, and both earn about the same.

My question is if I buy a place in a more affordable area, will this effect the divorce settlement?

Currently, where we live is a bit of an expensive area, and although we live in a house now, after the divorce, a house is probably out of reach, so I would probably be looking at buying a flat if I stayed in the area.

However, by moving to a more affordable area, I would then be able to buy a small house rather than a flat. But I wouldn't want to do this if by moving away my partner was able to ague that I should have less than a 50:50 split, because their need is greater than mine, as housing is more expensive for them (assuming they will stay in the area after divorce).

What I don't want to happen is for me to move to a more affordable area to save money, but then lose money in the settlement, so instead of saving money I end up losing out instead!

Thx
