I'm starting divorce proceedings this week, ringing the solicitor tomorrow to get the ball rolling. How much did it cost to do the whole divorce?

I couldn't bring myself to add all the bills up, but somewhere between £10k and £15k for me. For him £0 because he refused to engage a solicitor and dragged the process out over 6 years.

My divorce cost me around £20k due to an unnecessary custody battle over the children. When it came to finances I just accepted the meagre amount exh suggested as I could face wasting another £20k (well couldn’t really afford another £20k!!) just wanted the divorce to be over. In hindsight I should have gone to court for the finances too but I wasn’t emotionally or mentally strong enough for another battle!!!!!

I'm not sure,about£6k I think.I had an account at the solicitors that I paid into as and when.I am just waiting for my final bill.
If you can disentangle finances(make sure you have all his details) it will save time and money.

About £700 which was just cost of divorce and consent order themselves.

Mine cost me around £24k & my exH spent £40k+ Higher prices are due to conflicts, so if you think there will be a lot of disagreement, expect it to cost more.
I switched to a McKenzie friend after about 18 months (took 4 years in all to divorce and reach a financial settlement) This saved a lot of money.
It costs what it costs.

What a a McKenzie friend? Has anyone done an online divorce?

Please don't hurt me dear readers, but it was around 500quid - for the form to fill and court fee. Uncontested, no solicitors, no children and no maintenance [to me], after 2 years of separation and on the basis of separation (rather than unreasonable behaviour, adultery etc). We agreed that I will buy the husband out, the flat was valued and my job was just enough to get the mortgage and pay him his share. That, of course, was done with a solicitor, I think before the divorce came through. Divorce took about 4 months, all by post and we never went to any family court.

Mine cost about £6K as the consent order and sorting out the house took quite a lot of time.

DP's has cost him about £12K as his ex has been an absolute twat. It might run to more than this if he has to take her back to court again.

RainSim · 12/07/2018 18:48

Blimey I can't believe it costs so much!

MarieG10 · 16/07/2018 08:13

A friend is going through it currently. Negotiating and ex not yet agreed to,proposals but heading easily for £15k. If he rejects the proposed settlement it will very quickly start to double and if ends at court the combined costs for both circa £100k

The bottom line is that unless there are very significant assets, then arguing about it will often cost as much or more than the amount in dispute!

Many decent solicitors are charging £300 hour upwards!

Hence I guess why so many people don't get married now

Impossible question to answer.

If both parties are sensible and can agree a settlement between themselves then cost will be whatever the current Court Fee to file the Divorce application.

However, if one or both turns the Divorce into a contest or thinks the other has more than they are declaring then the costs will escalate rapidly once; Solicitors, Barristers and Courts become involved.

My ex wife who was the applicant for the Financial Order as she did not accept my offer jumped from one Solicitor to another hoping to get the deal she wanted.

After 2 years it ended up at a Final Hearing. Total cost to family was about 50K in fees alone. Ex wife's final settlement was way less than I had offered 2 years earlier. It had to be as 50K had gone on legal fees.
