separating - how does it work?????

After a couple of counselling sessions my husband has had a lightbulb moment and decided that it is easier to throw 17 years of relationship and 2 children down the drain rather than getting to the crux of our problems and trying to fix them... anyway..
how does it all work? Im a SAHM, not been employed for 8 years. I have a second interview next week - yes get me!! What do I do? Is there financial help I can get. I'm totally reliant on him financially. Also he works away. Childcare is £500+ per month. Am I better off working part-time or full-time. What are my rights on the house etc etc??
I'm really not sure what is available to me and how I can best get through this . The children are 4 and 7.

Opinions / advice..?? greatfully received.
Btw, I have a free solicitor appointment booked for after half-term.
