Not leaving the family home when divorcing? I would have thought that it shouldn't make a difference in terms of the eventual financial split, but I've often heard that you should stay?

Because you establish that you can afford to house yourself and this can decrease the settlement you receive.

Because it will make it easier for the other party to claim that they really need it and that you can afford to pay both for it and your own accommodation too.
