Useless solicitor

I am so bloody angry. This divorce is so difficult because my ex is such an angry and difficult person. I let him petition me because I didn't see why I should spend a grand doing it and no surprise it was full of nasty untrue stuff but who cares right?
Anyway sent it to my solicitor immediately and he said he'd deal with it right away. My solicitor was highly recommended and costs me £240 an hour and for that money I expect the best of service and advice.
5 weeks later my ex emails me outraged to say the court never received my petition and on further investigation it was still at the flipping solicitors in a pile of paperwork somewhere untouched.
This has undone all my careful work over the last 5 weeks as we had almost reached an agreement about settlement and he had finally calmed down. Now all that has gone out of the window, he wants the max settlement possible to punish me for pissing him around and now wants to take me to court which will cost me thousands of pounds. Our relationship has completely broken down and he has accused me of holding up the divorce out of spite which is completely untrue. I can't wait for the divorce to be over!
I rang my solicitor and a substitute sent it off to the court for me and said sorry it had been missed but it was "just one of those things". Easy for her to say, this is going to cost me money. She said my solicitor would call me back when he was in the office, no call no email 2 weeks later.
I sent off a snotogram today to ask for an explanation. I have a book about how to complain and followed a template in there with itemised points.
What is my legal redress here if their fuck up costs me money? And is it likely I'll get my money back if I sack them and start again with another solicitor?
I'm fuming.

Oh that's shit. I'm so sorry, there's no excuse for that.

If they don't offer satisfactory redress then set the Legal Ombudsman on them.

Yes I think I will Mrs Bert, it is inexcusable and to be so flippant about it.

Try the Solicitors Regulation Authority - unacceptable of your solicitor!

I'm a solicitor (Australia, though), and that is completely unacceptable!

What is your solicitor's position at the firm? Is there a higher-up that you can escalate this to?
