Husband leaving me

My husband is always threatening to leave, he puts me down and calls me really nasty names. Last night he didn't get his own way and the verbal abuse came out again. I did stick up for myself this time which shocked him but he says he's leaving. I don't want to leave our home but is it right that if the house is to big and he can't afford anywhere else then we have to sell it? Really don't know what to do. I've really looked after him and probably spoilt him. I feel so rejected. We have a daughter who is 7.

Like if your house is worth 400k you give your husband 200k to go away and you keep the house. This amount will be adjusted based on both your incomes. But most people don't have this sort of money and have to get the house remortgaged, which still won't be possible if the total outstanding loan outvalues the house. (I.e. you already own the home outright between you or don't have much left on your initial mortgage).

The only way you would keep your house is if you owned it yourself pre-marriage or if your husband earns so much money that he would be giving you a similar amount in a settlement worth half the house value anyway.

Thanks for replying. My husband earns £55k and I earn £14k. We do have a lot of equity in the house but I couldn't afford to buy him. Its so daunting that he keeps saying he's leaving me. Its now worn me out to the point I'm going to say nothing and see what he does. I can't keep putting up with it. I don't deserve to be called nasty names and treated like a child. I just wish he could see what he's doing but I don't think he ever will.
