Rent liability

My husband unexpectedly deserted the family home recently as he wants to divorce me. We have a joint mortgage. I don't think he has any grounds so maybe he is going to wait 2 years unless I petition on grounds of unreasonable behaviour (which I have a strong case for, but I am not psychologically ready to do). He is renting a property. Am I liable to pay half that rent at anytime? Either before or out of a divorce settlement? Thank you for any advice.

Assuming you are in E ngland & Wales, then no, you are not liable to his landlord for his rent. You are only liable for debts incurred in your sole name, or jointly.

If he runs up big debts post separation they may or may not be taken into account in the divorce, depending on all the circs. One reason for not hanging around for years before sorting the finances.

You really should see a solicitor now, as their advice may help you get emotionally ready to do the deed. Good luck.
