Now what? Just split with DH

I still call him DH as he is severely depressed and an alcoholic. We have split - he thinks temporarily - as I cannot expose our children to his illness. He is with his parents and I am at home.

We run a business together. I am part time, one DS at school, the other at home. The business is doing ok but there are debts and he is spiralling downwards. I am not a director, thank god.

He is continuing to work, pay all the bills etc but I am looking for a job, and fast. What should I do? I asked him to leave on Tuesday.

I have £80 to my name - he has said he will give me what I need. I have applied for tax credits (this I did before we split) so that will help. His parents have given me money too and they are very supportive and obviously very worried for him.

Obviously, once I get a job I will be able to worry less about him sending the business downwards but I won't be able to help him as much, but I am not sure I should anyway. This is a nightmare.

Do you think the business is likely to fail? Can his family help him to keep it going?

I think you need to get some legal advice. It is good he is saying he will support you financially, but I would imagine he is not going to be reliable.

Thank you for your post. I have name changed for this btw, I am definitely a regular but so many people know me in RL here I must protect my identity.

His family are helping him with the business and so will I, at least in the short term. I do so want him to get better. My good friend is a laywer and whilst I know it is not the same, she has given me some good advice to get on with. At some point I shall have to bite the bullet I think.

What I have realised is that I have a wonderful support network here, so I have decided not to pack up and move back to my home city. So that is something.

I really need a job. It has been a year since I worked in my career but I am former public sector so it isn't that easy to get back in. But I am calling as many contacts as possible.

I am a bit up and down but trying to stay positive.
