How do I choose a 'good' divorce solicitor?

Hi,

Apologies if I am posting on the wrong board. My husband of 5 years has walked out on me & DC. He's been in touch and he wants to start divorce proceedings. Please can you advice on how I should choose a good solicitor?

I am based in Surrey (near Epsom) and if anyone can give any recommendations then that would be hugely appreciated. Or just general advice on what to look for.

If you can, get a recommendation from a divorced friend. If a friend can recommend a divorce lawyer they should be pretty good. Then make sure that they give an initial session free so you can get some basic info and you can suss them out. Ask for an estimate of fees, or a breakdown of charges. Then appoint the solicitor based on if you think that they will support your cause and on whether you and they see eye to eye. You're not looking for them to be a new friend but it is useful to have sympathetic (to you) year when you're dealing with this kind of thing.

LST, go and see Laura at Gummersalls in Epsom, 01372 721122. I first used a recommendation from the Law Society who was useless. I then changed to Laura who could not have been better. I ended up with exactly what she told me I would get. Always had patience to explain all I needed and best of all she would reply to my emails that day, or the next working day.

I really cannot recommend Laura or her team more strongly.
