Can someone help, please?
Following my husbands affair, I started divorce proceedings; not because I wanted to, but he was threatening to sell the house from under me.
Cut a very long story short, the divorce was plodding along quite nicely ? and then I got made redundant. Three times. Money was an issue (still is, especially as I?m paying all the household bills, funding daughter at university and the soon to be ex pays zilch). So the bill for solicitor sadly ran up ? but I paid it all off after some months.
Because of the money situation, I had agreed with the solicitor that nothing more would proceed until I was in a position to fund the rest of the divorce. As far as I was aware, the decree nisi was ready to go to court.
So yesterday my wonderful friends surprised me with an early Xmas pressie ? they want to pay whatever is needed to finalise the divorce. So I ring solicitor to give approval for friends to talk with her to finalise how the money will be paid.
I am advised by her secretary that my decree nisi was granted over a year ago and that, because of this, we are ?going to have to start all over again?.
I had no idea the DN had been granted ? I was poleaxed to say the least. If I have known I was that close to divorce, I would have asked my brother for a loan.
So now she is saying I need to pay around another £500 because an affidavit needs to be signed, the finances will need looking at again (advised her we are still both happy with the financial resolution that came about from mediation and that the only thing that?s changed is the house is on the market).
Someone please advise me where I stand with this ? I cannot believe that at NO TIME did my solicitor advise me about this situation
