Does anyone elses kid have other conditions other than t1d? Do you find all conditions flare up when had a spell of bad blood sugars? Seems to have a massive knock on effect.
My son suffers with constipation since birth and when his numbers are high it flares up badly even where the meds for his stomach dont work properly. Hes more open to catching colds as well. Is that normal espically the constipation? He has autism as well and his behaviour is harder to manage but I know high bloods = rage just weren't sure about the illness side. Also under investigation for thyroid but everytime theyve ran the tests for the past 9 months they have to repeat the next time (its the blood on paper test) so not sure if thats also having some effect.

I believe that one of the many many challenges with Diabetes is that yes, it can make managing other conditions significantly harder (and vice versa - an infection like a cold, can make managing diabetes harder).

Ah I see. Unfortunately the hormones have kicked in and making things harder to control he was high for 5 days while the insulin raitos and basal was increased (on tresbia so takes 3 days to fully kick in) wasnt expecting such a knock on effect. Sad

Yes we find the same with my DS. Any bout of illness, even mild, makes blood sugars so much harder to manage. We also find that if blood sugars have been very up and down, it makes him quite tired and run down, and therefore more prone to pick up colds etc.

High blood sugar can worsen existing symptoms, so discussing the constipation, behavioural changes and thyroid concerns with your son’s healthcare team is important.

Other things flaring up can make sugars go off

sugars going off can make you prone to other things

its unpredictable
it’s really really hard

Not a child but yes, other conditions go along with T1 - under active thyroid and coeliac disease (do ask for a coeliac test, constipation is often a symptom). When blood sugars are high, the body takes water out of the bowel to try to dilute the high blood sugars, leaving the faeces dry and hard to pass, too. And any infection- cold, flu, tummy bug will lead to high blood sugars and increased insulin resistance - I always give 25% more basal when I have a cold (after 20 years experience and under medical advice)

High blood glucose also draws water out of the cells meaning that the cells in the brain, muscles and elsewhere shrink and can’t function properly. That is why a spate of high sugars = worsened mood, confusion, irritation, fatigue, impaired immune system. That and the swings from high to low which can also affect mood.

OP can you have a medication review if his diabetes isn’t well controlled? Is he having consistent carbs each day or does his diet vary too much for his current insulin regime to keep everything steady?
