My dh (48)has never had any symptoms of diabetes but was diagnosed following a health check. His cholesterol was also on the high side. He has a normal bmi. He was given a statin and metaformin. On the whole our day to day meals are pretty healthy it’s the snacks that let him down. Every night he would have a family bag of chocolate, a pack of biscuits, crisps etc and most nights alcohol. Following the shock of diabetes for the first three months he worked really hard at improving his diet. He had another blood test and had gone down to a pre diabetes level. Since then his eating has gone back to before. As he has no symptoms I think he is under the impression that he is fine. Does anyone know whether the drugs are enough to protect him (as he seems to believe).

Ahhh the old ‘I’m not going to take any responsibility for my health and hope this pill magically makes it okay to eat like shit’.

kidney problems, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, really, really painful neuropathy along with risk of amputation, erectile dysfunction etc etc etc. All things I regularly see in diabetic patients on Metformin who continue to eat like crap and end up on higher and higher doses of medication.

Thank you for the link. I think until he actually feels or sees a change in his body he isn’t going to get it. He is an intelligent person with his head buried in the sand. It’s very frustrating to see.
