I am 52 and have entered the pre-diabetic range (42) as at Christmas and as it was a shock I made an immediate change to my diet.
before, I’d have porridge or egg for breakfast with a ton of orange juice and be fine till 11 & have some toast. Then a bread-filled lunch. From lunch till dinner (which we eat late) it was toast with honey all the way. It’s like once I start eating it I can’t stop. Sweeter snacks were a big part of my life though bought as a one-off (I eat a whole packet of biscuits if they are in the house so it was basically binge-eating controlled by having to walk to the shops).
for years I’ve broken out into a sweat when eating cheap junk like birthday cake
portion size has never been in control (I didn’t gain weight as a young woman so only my teeth kept the score)
Now I’ve switched to a real orange at breakfast with a big bowl of porridge. I’m trying to have omelette or tuna salad for lunch. Then I have a handful of almonds or pistachios. Then another handful. Then I sit and munch through the whole bag. I buy berries but eat the whole lot. My afternoon slumps are greatly reduced but my afternoon habits seem unchanged albeit on healthier food
Does anyone have any advice?
