Hi my partner was diagnosed with type 2 recently following her visiting the doctors and complaining of a long list of symptoms, the main ones being extreme fatigue, weightgain and vomiting. Initial bloods showed high glucose then after a HbA1C it was confirmed to be type 2. However shes had hardly any advice, just been put onto Metformin twice a day which has led to stomach upsets and an increase in vomiting. She managed to get hold of a nurse at the surgery who has changed it to slow release Metformin but said not to worry about checking bloods, no advice re: diet just said repeat bloods in 3 months. Meanwhile my partner is feeling really rough and a little ignored as regards advice, plus she is only 20. Ive done the wrong thing and googled all of her symptoms and come up with a rare thing of high levels of cortisol but it just feels like weve been abandoned. Basically Im just asking if this is a normal way todiagnose diabetes or are we being short changed. TIA

Have a look at www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/. Low carb eating is the way forward. She needs to buy a meter and check before she eats and then two hours later, then eliminate everything adversely affects her blood sugar levels.

Agree diabetes.co.uk really food place to start. I was diagnosed at start of the year and now eat a low carb diet - wish I had done it years ago. She seems young for type 2 - monitoring her blood sugars and reducing carbs should reduce her blood sugar levels. If it’s not working after a couple of weeks she needs to go back as might not be a type 2.

Is she overweight? If not she might not be type 2.
