DH new diagnosis concerned

Hi all, DH is 36 and has lost a lot of weight recently, clothes falling off him. He’d also been very thirsty recently, lethargic and peeing a lot so GP did bloods and water sample.

He’s been told no ketones in urine so unlikely to be type 1, but high sugar in urine and told more likely type 2. Although they are still unclear which it is, today he’s been prescribed metformin and told to gradually increase the dose so one tablet per day this week, two next week and three the following week, after that to stick at three tablets per day (forever?) sorry I don’t know the dosage.

His diet is bad, lives on white bread and sugary drinks. But he’s underweight so I was surprised at the possibility of type 2 (excuse my ignorance) and a side effect of metformin according to dr google is weight loss. He can’t really afford to lose much more tbh!

There’s a similar thread on here where the person is young and not overweight, and possible pancreatic cancer was mentioned so I’m really worried that something is being overlooked. But the chap on that thread has a good diet, whereas DH like I said doesn’t eat well.

Does anybody with more knowledge have any advice on this? I should trust the GP to check everything out but I know things do get missed.

Thanks

No don't trust GP. Some are classic textbook and automatically assume T2. I would definitely ask for a blood test to check presence of autoantibodies and C peptide which are indicative of T1. It's important to eliminate the possibility, for health going forwards.

Just to add presence of ketones is not indicative of T1 so that's wrong information. Diagnosis is made on high blood sugar levels and further on presence of antibodies.
