Quick question about metformin and levels please!

Hello all,
I have a question about metformin and blood sugar levels which I need to speak to my nurse/doctor about but as it's the weekend I doubt I'll get to speak to anyone until Monday.
So I have gestational diabetes diagnosed 4 weeks ago. At first they wanted me to try and control my levels with diet alone which I tried for 10 days. They want levels no higher than 7 one hour after eating but as my levels would go over this 50% of the time they asked me to start the metformin tablets they had prescribed and also continue with the diet.
The metformin came with clear instruction I've checked and double checked to take one tablet in the morning then 1 tablet with dinner and do this for 7 days then increase to two tablets twice a day.
I'm on the second day of taking two tablets twice a day and I'm getting very low readings.
For example this evening I've had two slices of brown bread with some fish and lots of watermelon. An hour later my blood sugar level was 4 and I'm getting regular low levels below 5.
I'm worried this is now too low but I don't know what is too low or if it's dangerous.
Should I cut back the metformin? I'll obviously speak to my doctor when I can, any advice appreciated!

It's unusual to go from one a day to two tablets twice a day. I think it's been labelled wrong and you should be taking one tablet in the morning and one tablet in the evening. With or after food. Ring the pharmacy tomorrow and ask them to check the prescription.

Sorry, I missed the bit where you said you took one with dinner too.
The next step is usually one in the morning and two in the evening. What were your readings like before you started two tablets twice a day?

Thanks for replies!
The instructions to move up to two tablets were in an info pack I was given to follow under 'how to start metformin' with a table of how to take and when to increase.

Before increasing there was definitely a big improvement and most readings were in target with maybe 25% going just over (7.2-7.5)

4 and 5 are perfect readings.
