Checking for diabetes test ?

When you are checked for diabetes is it a fasting glucose tolerance test? As in blood test then drink glucose then wait, then blood test?

My GP gave me a blood test form and said go to the main hospital. It says two samples on the form. I have had gestational diabetes during pregnancy, but now my baby is here. In theory the diabetes should have gone. I contacted my midwife who didn't have a clue and I've tried ringing the hospital, but it just rings out for the blood test dept. I asked Gp if I'm ok to breastfeed during the test and he didn't know ( helpful)

What does it say on the form? It will likely be a fasting glucose plus hba1c. NICE guidelines state that those who've had gestational diabetes should have the aforementioned blood tests annually as they're at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

And by fasting glucose I don't mean the glucose tolerance test just the usual nothing to eat from midnight and only water/black tea/coffee beforehand

The blood test form doesn't say anything, just two samples and what container to put them in. It's a computer print out with labels for the vials.

When I did my tests in pregnancy I fasted from 10pm the night before , then had the first test around 9am the drank the glucose drink, sat about (I think for 2 hours) and then had another blood test.

It won't be one like that it'll just be a straight forward blood test but you will need to fast Smile

@WreckTangled great I hope so ! I don't fancy hours at the hospital. My pregnancy ones were done at the local small hospital, this test is at the main big hospital, but at least they have people there specifically doin blood tests all day.

It probably says what it’s for on one of the stickers. HbA1c, or GTT, glucose or similar.
