Post pregnancy diabetes test

Hi, wondering if anyone can help. I had gestational diabetes. I've got my follow up blood test this week, 3 months after giving birth.
I know I have to fast for it, but is it the same as the GD test where you have to hang around for a bit, drink the sugary drink etc? Or is it just a blood draw?
I'm trying to work out if it's practical to take my baby along with me!
Thanks!

Hey it’s the blood test that I got after having my baby , hope this helps xx

zoobincan · 12/01/2020 21:41

I had to do the 2 hour wait test when DD was 6 weeks.

neverornow · 13/01/2020 12:32

Had mine Friday. 1st round of (fasted) blood was drawn, drank sugary drink and then 2nd blood drawn 2 hours later

Got call today with my results...not good. Fasted (1st) bloods were above the threshold so have referred to the diabetes clinic :-(

It is just a blood test that somehow monitors your sugar levels for the past 3 months. Hopefully it will come back clear and then you should have them yearly for the next 3 yrs (minimum) as you are at increased risk of becoming diabetic after having GD.

I'm having a HbA1c test instead of the fasting one which I thought was the usual test they do at 3 months and don't have to fast for... Maybe give your surgery a call and check what you're booked for and need to do.

It's usually just a blood test.

I had to have a GTT after my second but only bloods after my first. They are repeated yearly.

Thanks everyone :-) I've found a number to call the clinic now and they've confirmed it is just a quick test, should be in and out in 15 mins. Suspect that might be a little optimistic though!

@neverornow are you still pregnant or post birth? I've got a feeling mine won't be great. I'm about 2 stone over weight...

@vixb1 - I am 3 months post pregnancy

vixb1 · 13/01/2020 15:40

Oh that's rubbish. Did you suspect something was wrong? Any history of it in your family?
Either way I definitely need a diet overhaul!

Yep my Dad is type 2. I can definitely feel it when blood sugars are low. But aside from that I have been feeling great, BMi is in the healthy range and I am back to pre pregnancy weight.

I'm sure it'll just be a case of watching my diet and exercising more 🤞🏻my Dad has at times over the years gotten his under control and not needed medical intervention so hoping that'll be the case for me too
