Baby size with gestational diabetes

Hi, I'm 33 weeks pregnant tomorrow and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes a month ago. I've been following a strict diet and my blood readings have all been good and within range, but at my obstetricians appointment today the baby is now weighing in at 5 and a half pounds, up two pounds in a month. This is roughly three weeks ahead of what it should be. I'm feeling really down as I'd hoped by controlling my sugars the baby's growth would stabilise a bit but it's moved from below the 90th percentile to above. Has anyone any experience of this, did they end up with a huge baby at the end of it all? Thanks in advance

When I had gestational diabetes - diagnosed at 36 weeks my baby was 10 1/2 lbs, the labour was very easy and took 2 hours

I was borderline on two of mine, 9 1/2 and 10lbs.

I had gestational diabetes with my second. He was 8lb. My first and third were both 9lb and I had no diabetes with those pregnancies. Try not to worry. Has anyone given you an indication of birth weight?

TheDisillusionedAnarchist · 14/05/2019 11:58

Mine were 7lb 6oz (GD on insulin very tight control) and 7lb 15oz (GD on insulin not great control) they thought DD2 would be enormous in scan day before she was born.

When you say your readings are good, how good? Some hospitals use quite a wide range for ok and I chose to use the tighter NICE guidelines in my first pregnancy.

I had GD, induced at 37.5 weeks and DD was 8lb 11

I was borderline, was told baby would be big he was 6lbs 10oz!

lozengeoflove · 14/05/2019 12:06

Yes, I had GD with my third child. Constantly measuring over 90th percentile wrt abdominal circumference. Was induced twelve days early due to size concerns.
Baby was 7 lb 8 oz and by farmhouse smallest 🤷🏻‍♀️

They thought my baby would be over 90th venture, I had GD and controlled with diet. Was being scanned every two weeks. He was 7lbs 5oz, born at 39+4.

Wallabyone · 14/05/2019 13:17

Centile, not venture!

I gained a LOT of weight and was diagnosed late at 32 weeks with GD. I remained diet controlled throughout but was warned I'd have a big baby. He was eventually born at 37+6 via ECS (lots of episodes of reduced movements) weighing 6.6lbs! Highly recommend you join Gestational Diabetes UK Mums on FB. There's a thread going on this very topic atm.

Just to chip in, I had GD and scans for a massive baby. She was 7,11 and my smallest

DustyMaiden · 04/07/2019 21:39

Mine weighed 8lbs.

Mylittlepony374 · 04/07/2019 21:41

GD with my first, on insulin towards end, induced at 39 weeks because they said she was at least 10pound. She was just under 8.

Featherbag · 04/07/2019 22:08

My baby was 5lbs 3ozs, but he was born at 32 weeks!

riotlady · 29/12/2019 12:39

I had GD, had a section at 38 weeks as they said DD would be big but she was 7lbs 2 in the end.

Franticbutterfly · 11/10/2020 14:20

I'm pretty sure I had undiagnosed GD with DD2 she was 10lb 4oz. I had diagnosed GD with DD3, I controlled it extremely well, she was 7.5lbs. So yes it can be done.
