I’ve been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and been told I need to do the pin prick test several times a day. I can’t do it I’ve tried so many times spoke to midwife who wasn’t that helpful I’ve only been able to do one this morning. I’m really struggling I’ve tried loads of things

Could you request (or pay for privately) a freestyle libre?

Cloud9889 · 15/11/2018 19:37

What is that?

What is it that's stopping you? Needle phobia? The pain?

Focalpoint · 15/11/2018 19:45

What lancet are you using? My son used me fastclix and it doesn't really hurt.

Contact your practice nurse. I would say they have more experience of injections and testing for diabetes

Freestyle libre is a monitor that you wear and it connects to your phone so you don't have to pinprick.

The libre is great, but expensive. I'm not great at finger pricks either (& find that HCPs often don't have much sympathy!). I found that you can get some blood glucose monitors with lancing devices that have "alternative test sites" cap - it means you can test blood from your forearm or leg instead of finger.

In my experience this is considerably less painful/stressful than testing on fingertip.

There is research that says numbers from alternate sites are 20 minutes out, but I've never had any problems.
