Second pregnancy after GDM in First

I'm pregnant with my second and keen to avoid developing gestational diabetes again. The midwife I've seen seems to think it's unavoidable and I'm really confused by the dietary advice. I've been following a lower carb diet and monitoring my blood glucose with the machine and strips I had left over from my last pregnancy but I'm not sure how to interpret the results. I've had a few high readings but usually only after a cheat meal. Highest being 9.4 after a Indian takeaway the other day. 8.0 after going for afternoon tea. Some of my fasting glucose results have been 5.6-5.8. Other than this everything has been fine providing I eat low carb. Does this mean I already have GDM? Or are these normal readings after having a something naughty?
