Dodgy tum when eating out

I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic just under a month ago. Was prescribed metformin, initially 500 x 1 then move up to twice a day. I have generally felt awful but started to feel better towards the latter end of the week. Have had a bit of tummy gripes but not too bad other than that. Have diagnosed ibs anyway so tummy is always a little off. Anyway it is my birthday so thought I would have a day off the safe food and went out to an Italian for a meal. Had a pepperoni calzone and about half way through it started with awful tummy pain and diarrhoea. I have had this before and no problems so now I'm wondering if it's the metformin causing this reaction. I know that I should eat heavy food like this but it was just as a special occasion for my birthday. Anyway my question is does metformin cause any dodgy tummy issues if the wrong food is consumed?

Yes, metformin. The more carbs you eat, the more diarrhoea you get. Carrying Imodium instants on your person at all times is the solution. Fortunately your body will probably get used to the metformin in a few weeks/months, so this shouldn't be forever. And obviously watching your diet most of the time will help. Hope you're feeling better by now!
