Starting the Newcastle Diet...

Started yesterday after breakfast at 105.2kg. I've got a hba1c test today to track it.
So far so Good! Im using exante products as meal replacement and the almond vanilla shake was ok- quite marzipan y. The veg stir fry mixed with the laksa soup mix would have been OK if I'd added a LOT more garlic, chili and ginger. This morning's cherry berry shake was properly nasty- like thick old skool cough mixture. Live and learn.
Any hot tips, companions, advice are welcome.

Effectively, crash dieting. Weetabix, seeds and milk: 300 calories? Tomato sauce and broccoli: 200? Veg soup: 200. No extras, no just, no only, It worked before; it'll work again. When I get down a bit further, I can add a bit of meat and general niceness to maintain but I don't think I am in any danger of scurvy on this regime.

Weetabix breakfast, burger toast with peanut butter lunch bit busy and cba, veg soup for tea. Unable to resist the portion of summer pudding sent over from the ILs but hey... come on, wooster. Keep at it.

Weetabix etc, McDonald's salad, veg and tomato sauce. Off piste a bit, via the kids' sweetie jars and a mini Jam tart but the main prob is the water: it is STILL hard to drink enough to keep Things Moving. Of all the drink problems I assumed I would be battling at 50, this is pretty low on the list.

Back to school /work today so that weight may be a random figment of the imagination. It's all a bit vague...
Still suffering from a reluctant bottom (NOT a Friday night reference). Weetabix breakfast, huge green salad lunch and a mass of veg with Bolognese sauce for tea. Also some stewed apple. I should be sitting in the smallest room phoning lesson plans through to the coverline, not gloomily soldiering on while trying not to fart in front of a class of already traumatised new year 7s.
Weetabix today, three day old veg stir fry for lunch and planning a veg soup for tea.

If something akin to the hurricane Irma hits the UK, I can only apologise.

It's just a very low calorie diet! It's called this because it reflects research by the University of Newcastle which shows that significant weightloss ( 10-15 % of body weight) causes the loss of visceral/internal fat around the liver and pancreas and resets the pancreas ability to regulate blood sugar. The experiments used shakes (and some veg for roughage!) so they could regulate the data. I, and others, use(d) shakes because they are easy to organise and less easy to "cheat" and underestimate! Definitely worth a Google of Newcastle diet and Professor Roy Taylor...

I think yesterday was actually 93.7... my scales weigh 2k heavy so I always have to mentally knock that off. Sophisticated mental maths like that has felt beyond me this week. Perhaps as well I don't teach maths.

I felt SO stupid when I was diagnosed with type 2 about 3½ yrs ago. Longtime vegetarian, no sugar in beverages, very little intake of cake or alcohol, Mediterranean diet for the last 30 yrs - so what gives? It took me some time to figure it out and consulting with those who run Diabetes courses, but it seems that if you experienced severe, longterm stress this will cause your body to produce far too much cortisol which liberates glucose energy for the 'fight or flight' response.

If you do not use up that glucose energy (even by going for a brisk walk), then elevated cortisol over the long term will consistently produce more glucose than you need, leading to increased blood sugar levels. It can take 20 yrs for diabetes to establish itself.

Remember - there are several causes for Type 2; it can be obesity, reduced activity during convalescence or retirement or, as in my case, longterm stress. There was a man in my diabetes X-PERT class who broke his leg and developed Type 2. Within 6 months he managed to get out of the diabetes range by cutting back on rice-pasta-spuds-bread.

Thanks for the info- as well as being portly, I am a stress head so double whammy... it can be a mysterious beast, the pancreas; on the BBC prof, Angela Rippon was tested and found to have, I think, >6kg of visceral fat, despite being incredibly slim and very fit. If that amount happens to be over ones own pancreas' fat tolerance level, then t2 lies ahead. With anxiety, hidden fat, it's a miracle everybody hasn't got it!

Normal breakfast, big dinner though... KFC with the kids and forced to eat their leftovers. Fortunately I think the louche glamour of the Colonel has worn off for a bit. It usually comes up every ten years or so and lasts a couple of months. Couldn't be bothered with tea so weetabix, seeds and inulin. I have reintroduced apples, partly because its more of a maintenance thing, partly because the Waitrose braeburns have become lovely, unlike the ocado ones, but mostly because I didnt have any dinner to take to work on friday so I had two apples. Apples are very good for the Downstairs department. Hurrah.

Hi you commented on my low blood sugar diet. Your doing so well I'm finding it tough am struggling to feel full without carbs which is rubbish Blush can I ask which shakes you used

I used the exante ones. Bought them online-there's usually an offer on! Some are disgusting but others are not too bad, especially with ice, blended up. Look at the first couple of pages of the thread, where I bitched on about the good, the bad and the ugly...

Porridge breakfast w seeds, inulin and some pb toast. Heavy carb but it's COLD... McDonald's salad lunch (Look out for the thread about how shit their new dehumanised system is) and veg soup tea. Must be a badly overdue poo, I think.
