Who can advise me on care home funding

My relative has Alzheimer’s and is at home with maximum level of support going in. They are part funded, as savings deplete this changes to full funded and then swings back again.

Family decided it’s in their best interest to move and have a place in mind. They have visited several times to familiarise and it’s nearer to family for more frequent visiting. They accept council funded residents.

How do we go about starting this process and most importantly making sure the LA doesn’t try and push us to accept a different placement. We would want to keep using the current carers until a place opens up.

Thanks in advance

Does the person have a house to be sold to pay for care?
Age Uk have some good factsheets available online.

Does you relative have capacity to make such a decision for themselves? If not does someone have LPOA?

I’m a senior social worker in adult services. I can’t speak for all local authorities but you’d call for a care assessment, and then you’ll have a call for a triage potentially and be added to the waiting list. My LA has a large waiting list but due to funds depleting, you may be prioritised some what.

Does relative own her own home and live alone? If so, the home will be an asset and she can have a deferred payment which means the LA will put a loan against the property. She will be given more choice in this case and can have a placement above the rates if there’s enough equity to sustain the placement. I think personally as they accept the rates you’ll have no issues, it’ll be a case of whether that home have the vacancy by the time she is assessed and funding set up. Hope that helps

If they can wait until a place comes up, do they actively need a care home or is it just a preference. Also, do they have capacity to make care decisions?

Thanks for all your replies. Sorry forgot to add they are tenants not homeowners and LPA for both aspects is in place
@lazymermaid
they already have a care act assessment re needs at home and the current care package of 4 visits at 2:1. I’m thinking would they need reassessment for a move to placement and MC assessed ? (unlikely to have capacity)
and would the LA try to push for a move to a different placement if one was available and / or cheaper, or could relative stay in her home with the care packag. Hope that makes sense
