My dear Mum has alzheimer's. She is in middle to end stage - only 72. She suffers from Sundowners Syndrome as well as Capras Syndrome. She lives with my Dad and he has stage 3 lymphoma but is quite well considering. We are struggling with Mum's psychotic episodes which seem to come on around 6pm each night and escalate until she is literally trying to kick my Dad out (she thinks he is another man who is there to hurt her and constantly asks for her husband). My Dad ends up sleeping on the sofa and usually, the next day, she has no recollection of the previous night's events. I was there last night and had to sleep in bed with her as she was absolutely petrified. Psychiatrist came today and has upped her meds (and prescribed more) pending a brain scan which has been requested. The long and the short of it is, we are struggling to cope and considering respite care for Mum in a home, to see how it goes and give Dad some time to rest. My head is mashed reading all this information on the internet. Has anyone ever gone down the respite care home route and, if so, where do we start? Thanks in advance.
