Dementia & Alzheimer's
Dad has Coronavirus

He is 98 and in residential care. He has vascular dementia and I haven't seen him since mid March.
Was told yesterday he tested positive and has been ill for a week now and been in bed or sitting on a chair. Eating small meals but not taking on much fluids. The carer pushed for antibiotics and his had them for four days now.
I know the stories of older folk shaking off this disease but he hasn't improved much this past week but not gotten any worse either. We can't visit him unless it's end of life which the GP on Tuesday said it wasn't.
The carers don't say too much but for him to be in bed all this time is unheard of.
The staff have been tested apparently but if any are positive I don't know.
I guess he'd be in hospital if it was normal times but that won't happen. He hasn't any other health conditions.
Not sure why I'm posting really but how long can someone live with Coronavirus? Will it take weeks and weeks for him to improve?
It's horrible we can't go up to see him.

The link below may help. It looks like 3-7 days from now you'll know if he's progressing to the more severe form. Hopefully he won't, andafter that it'll just be a prolonged recovery.

Hi thanks for the link. His been ill over a week and still has the cough. Been a bit better overnight and talking a bit more now.
Having antibiotics might have worked? I know they say they don't !
Hard to know without seeing him. There are two poorly with it in there and he has been isolated for over a week now.
He always fights off most infections so I'm not surprised his a bit better even at 98!

Even at 98, without relevant underlying medical conditions the odds are still in his favour. But if he's going to recover (and it sounds hopeful given that he's had it over a week) it can still be a long haul - it can be weeks, though it won't necessarily be.

His a bit better today apparently: eating more and sitting up in bed.
He fights off everything! He is amazing.
I know it'll be ages until his totally better but it sounds promising up to now.
