Hi , my mum has been in a nursing home since Xmas last year , we’ve had heart breaking time as her mental state deteriorates , sometimes she can be agitated but we visit as often as we can
This morning on my visit I noticed one of her tablets on the floor and an empty syringe no needle but I was shocked
I went straight to the head nurse and she explained that my mum had knocked the tablet out of the nurses hand as for the syringe she couldn’t answer on behalf of the night staff but thought it looked like juice
I’m worried sick as they are under strict instructions no sedation without letting us know ...

You can ask what medication she was given, if it was a sedative do you expect them to call you in the middle of the night.

retired makes a good point. Would you want them to call you in the middle of the night if they do need to sedate her? Also, why do you want to know, do you not trust them to take care of her? If you do not trust them, then you're better off finding another place or caring for her yourself.

If it had no needle it could have just been anything. Does she have liquid meds? They most likely measured it in the syringe.

I hope that didn't sound insensitive. I understand how you're feeling. My mum is in early stages of dementia, and her mobility if awful. At the moment, my sister cares for her, but we anticipate that will need to change within the year.

Maybe it was juice, maybe as pp said a liquid med, you will have to ask them. They can look,at her meds chart then ask the night staff later.

If you don’t have power of attorney for health and well-being they can decide with the go that it may be best for her to be sedated. Basically unless you have poa they don’t have to listen to you.
