My Mum

Went to visit my mum yesterday as it was Mother's Day. She has Alztheimers but is living independently at the mo.
It was a busy day with lots of family around so her short term memory was really bad. Constantly having the same conversations over and over.
She is 87 now.
I came home and cried, this might be the last Mother's day she is here or remembers us.
I love my mum so much Sad

Flowers its called the long goodbye :( theres no sugaring the pill. its shit. i lost my dad to the bastard disease when he was only 73. Its not fair.

If i have only one piece of advice it is this - look at care homes sooner than you think you need to. otherwise you'll not have a choice when the time comes as you'll only be able to go with whats available and they differ ALOT

no it really isn't fair at all. is your mum on any medication? whilst there is no cure there are drugs that can significantly slow down the progress of the disease. we had our heads firmly in the sand and didn't find out about these things but it is worth pushing for psychiatric referral to see if your mum could benefit. xxx

Yes she's on meds but doesn't always remember to take them and they won't put her on the full dose until something is sorted. I don't live near to be able to go in and do this for her and I'm not sure what my sisters are doing about it. (Bit of a sore point)
The hospital can't arrange anyone to go in unless it involves them doing daily care and she won't have that.
She also has an underactive thyroid and probably isn't taking that medication either.
