Quick query about clothes sizing

If my DH is a size 16 neck for shirts, and I want to buy him a t shirt for Christmas, what size chest does that translate to - 38, 40, 43 or 46 inches?

Erm - depends they don't easily translate, I have a particularly large neck and shirt-makers think this means I should be built like a gorilla. So I am an 18" neck but only a 44" chest. I would guess at 16" = 40" but does he like to wear his T-shirts loose, if he of larger build etc which could push it up to 43" or even 46".

A rather unhelpful answer except that we can probably eliminate 38"!

Hmm. Well he has more t shirts marked L than M, so I will go for the 43 I think.
