Foreign footballers speaking English

Thought for the day: how come foreign footballers are so s**t-hot at languages? Thierry Henry or Marcel Dessailly could walk into GCSE English tomorrow and pass. Peter Schmeichel could probably do an oral at degree level! And yet some of ours even struggle to speak recognisable English...

Impressed with Lineker though, doing his Maradona interview a while back in Spanish. I think the interview itself was done through an interpreter, but the chat and setting-up was definitely all in Spanish - I saw clips of it - and he even used a passive reflexive, which some of DW's older pupils still struggle with!)

zippitippitoes · 27/04/2008 19:50

cristiano ronaldo is shit hot

DoubleBluff · 27/04/2008 19:51

Thierry Henry can do no wrong in my book.

ranting · 27/04/2008 19:54

So it's only English footballers who are as thick as pig shit then. Hmmm.
Interestingly when we were in France last year we saw the French team playing on the TV and afterwards they interviewed Thierry Henry and you know what, he even does that ummm thing when he speaks in his native language. I always thought he did that because English was his second language.

PaninoPan · 27/04/2008 19:55

but zippi and DB provide their own.....

ranting · 27/04/2008 19:57

I love the way Schmeichel talks with a northern accent though, amuses me no end, Jan Molby was another one too.

zippitippitoes · 27/04/2008 20:03

ranting · 27/04/2008 20:03

Lol at lack of laughs for Newcastle supporters

shabster · 27/04/2008 20:07

Giorgio Samaras (used to play for Manchester City now Celtic) is really hysterical. We saw him at a game at Eastlands (Man Citys ground) he was fouled and then got booked. He said a really, really rude Greek word and my 10yr old almost fell off his seat laughing. The ref just looked at him with a blank expression.

Many of our footballers are really dim.

girlfrommars · 27/04/2008 20:07

Lineker played for Barcelona for a while.

Oblomov · 27/04/2008 20:07

Lots of fottballers are not exactly know for their brain.
Michael Carrick, now Man Utd, really shoudl learn not to open his moth. He doesn't do himself anuy favours.
Rooney is the same. He should let his footballl do the talking.
Beckham, just makes himself look stupid, as soon as he opens his mouth. Lovely to look at. That about as far as it goes.

zippitippitoes · 27/04/2008 20:09

i dont find beckham attractive in any language

and i even dont like his football much either

ranting · 27/04/2008 20:11

I can't understand the fascination with Beckham myself. He's not good looking and he's a very average footballer, had his share of moments but still average.

zippitippitoes · 27/04/2008 20:13

well someone can try and convince me that whenever i think about beckham i always have a mental image of a long ball looping into nowhere

zippitippitoes · 27/04/2008 20:14

that is convince me otherwise

zippitippitoes · 27/04/2008 20:15

ic ant really criticise anyone for their ability or not to speak english

misspiggy · 27/04/2008 20:22

So many foreigners speak excellent English though don't they? You go abroad and feel embarassed. (especially me with my super-crap GCE French ).

Ooh at your daughter Zippi, working with Fernando Torres. ((((drool)))

Ellbell · 27/04/2008 20:24

Fabio Capello would seem to buck the trend, though. (I was approached recently to be interviewed for some radio programme about why exactly he was finding it so hard to learn English. I declined. Stupid question!)

Oblomov · 27/04/2008 20:24

I don't like Beckham. But I can appreciate that he is, if you didn't know anything about him, initially appealing, I mean he hasn't been slapped with the 'ugly stick', has he ?

Oblomov · 27/04/2008 20:27

Zippi's dd works with Torres. Ohohoh swoon.
Ronaldo is a spotty geek, but the best footballer. I watched a long programme about him and warmed to him alot. He is totally dedicated.

zippitippitoes · 27/04/2008 20:28

she doesnt now she did in 2006
